We won in Hillsborough County! After several months Organize Florida, along with many allies, won the fight in removing the Confederate Memorial from the City of Tampa. But because our members and activists stood up against white supremacists, they are being targeted. The Save Southern Heritage group created a dossier of our members and friends who attended the commission meeting, and have been threatening them through social media, harassing phone calls and even at the meeting. But we are not going to be silenced, and we are going to do whatever it takes to make sure others aren’t targeted again either. That’s why we are demanding that Rick Scott and the State of Florida stand up and speak out against white supremacy and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.
“Disseminating the dossier could violate state law: Florida Statute 817.568, which concerns "criminal use of personal identification information," says that any person who "possesses, uses, or attempts to use personal identification information concerning a person without first obtaining that person’s consent, and who does so for the purpose of harassing that person" is guilty of a first-degree misdemeanor. If any alleged harassment was "facilitated or furthered by the use of a public record," the charge would be upgraded to a third-degree felony.”
Please sign today to tell Rick Scott to speak out against white supremacy and this dangerous harassment, and the State Attorney to prosecute these white supremacist to the fullest extent of the law. We will hand deliver these petitions to the State of Florida, demand action, and show these white supremacists that they can’t get away with threatening and intimidating community leaders.
We will not be silenced. We will not back down. But we need your help to make sure others don’t do this again.
